The world largest quarry of this kind today is operated by Norsk Stein A/S, the company we founded in 1987.
In 2009/2010 the quarry has been upgraded. From now on the yearly production volume is 10 million tonnes of high-quality aggregate for European markets. The quarry is located in the Jelsa fjord, just north of Stavanger. This high-quality aggregate (granodiorite) can be directly loaded via an underground extractor with a capacity of 2,400 tonnes per hour into self-discharging vessels with a cargo capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes.
The production process starts with drilling and blasting primary crusher material. This material is then fed into the ultra-modern crushing and screening plant. The materials will be washed and produced to a quality complying with EN standards and in accordance with market requirements. Our products have a variety of uses, including the manufacture of concrete and asphalt, in rail track construction, hydraulic engineering and as an underlayer material.
The total available reserves in the quarry are estimated at approximately 350-500 million tonnes.
